Broadmead Greenline, Bristol

Our work at Cabot Circus was highly praised and the practice was asked to design a scheme to refurbish the adjoining Broadmead shopping centre. The aim was to bring the tired 1950’s streetscape up to the high standard of the new retail quarter.

The design aimed for a high quality, retail environment with a clean and contemporary finish and reduced street clutter. It was imperative that the shops continued to trade through the construction process and careful management with the contractor achieved completion of the scheme with minimal disruption to the streets.

The project lifted the quality of Broadmead East and Merchant Street South which emanate from the Podium, an important node at the heart of the City. The design brought structure to these streets and the Podium whilst tying seamlessly into three neighbouring areas: Cabot Circus to the east, Quakers Friars to the south and Broadmead BID to the west. Novell Tullett successfully gained approval from Bristol City Council, whilst maintaining the integrity of the original concept.

John Hirst Manager of Broadmead (now Destination Bristol) said that the shopping area:

“had improved dramatically and that the scheme had exceeded all expectations”
