Milford Dock, Pembrokeshire

Novell Tullett was engaged with Turley on the masterplanning of this 23.5 hectare scheme in Pembrokeshire. Our skills in demonstrating place making and integration of the building proposals with the public spaces was key to the success of the planning submission in achieving outline consent.

The historic context of the designed town of Milford provides the setting and raison d’etre of the harbour, and this is juxtaposed with high tech C21st energy industries within the wider Haven. The scheme includes new public realm for the proposed retail scheme, hotel, housing areas, an artisan market, new offices for the MH Port Authority client, a Technical College, boat storage and maintenance areas. The wider harbour may also be developed to provide berths and facilities for cruise ships and liners.

We worked with Turleys on public consultation material and brought the scheme to the Design Commission for Wales where it was received enthusiastically, as the scheme would bring new life to this historic town.

Inspiration for the design was taken from built elements and artefacts derived from the historic town, its former whaling industry, and the C21st energy infrastructure. Uniting the dockside and the town was a key concept, with new routes between the two and shared space streets through the development to maximise pedestrian use and the value of the waterside location.
